Indianapolis has transformed into a regional tech powerhouse in the recent years. Tech employment has grown at an impressive 68% since 2006, led by 1,700% growth in Internet-based companies and 8,100 new jobs in custom programming and systems design (Forbes). Indianapolis offers a vibrant community that's affordable with entry-level tech salaries. The city stands out for two reasons: its low cost of living and the quality of its business leadership. In May 2017, Salesforce established its regional headquarters in 247,000 square feet at the newly renamed Salesforce Tower (formerly Chase Tower). With this move, Salesforce announced it would increase its already 1,600-person Indianapolis workforce by an additional 800 employees, while also committing to train 500 apprentices in Indianapolis by 2020.
A new venture began by the former ExactTarget founders, a $2.5 billion company which was purchased by Salesforce in 2013. launched startup studio and venture fund High Alpha in 2015. They recently became an anchor tenant at the new mixed-use development Bottleworks and will continue to launch and support a number of startups, including: Sigstr, Lessonly, TinderBox and Visable. After initially raising $35 million in less than two years and then nearly $100 million in a follow-on fund, High Alpha has plans to create approximately ten companies over the next four years by investing in local cloud-based and software startups.
India-based Infosys opened its $8.7 million, 35,000 square foot Technology and Innovation Hub in One America Tower in March 2018, a stone's throw away from Salesforce Tower. In addition, Infosys announced in April 2018 that it has chosen the former Indianapolis International Airport terminal site to develop its $245 million, 786,000 square foot U.S. Education Center. Infosys plans to fill 3,000 high-paying positions by 2023.
In August 2017, it was announced that Viral Launch, a marketing tech firm that helps clients launch products and grow sales on Amazon.com, will be increasing it's Indianapolis-based workforce by 250 individuals by 2021.
Union 525 is a recently developed 122,000 square foot building in downtown Indianapolis, just east of Lucas Oil Stadium, that was created for tech companies by tech entrepreneurs. Offering 'flexible' leases for tech firms, Union 525 was fully leased less than six months after opening.
In August 2017, other former ExactTarget executives announced they will move Cheetah Digital into space at the Guaranty Building on Monument Circle. The enterprise cross-channel marketing software company plans on expanding their Indianapolis operations and will triple its employment with up to 100 high-wage jobs by 2021 (IEDC).
KAR Auction Services, Inc. recently announced their plans to invest $3.75 million in downtown Indianapolis to house the new, expanded U.S. headquarters and tech center of the company's TradeRev business unit. Executives say the new investment will create 200 additional, high-paying jobs by 2023.
